As a dog owner, a slowdown is harder to read than an illness. There's no clear cause, so most owners assume it's just age. Often, it's a gap instead.

When a wolf or wild dog brings down prey, the pack doesn't start with the muscle. The organs go first, liver, heart, kidney, the densest, most perishable, most valuable part of the animal. Muscle meat gets eaten last, because instinct already knows which part matters most.
